LAC Presents: MOMIX Opus Cactus

Dance, Acrobatics & Illusions – Moses Pendleton Brings the American Southwest to Glorious Life

On October 12, 2018, the Living Arts Centre kicks off its Great Night Out series with MOMIX Opus Cactus at 8:00PM in Hammerson Hall. Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased at the Box Office (905-306-000) or online at www.livingartscentre.ca.

Known for their famous dance / acrobatic / contortionist skills, as well as for presenting works of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, MOMIX is a world-renowned company of dancer-illusionists founded and directed by Moses Pendleton. Touring the world for the past 35 years, the company not only performs live in theatres, but has also been featured on television, feature films, commercials, and in large-scale world events, including Emmy award-winning specials and the 3D IMAX film, Imagine.

Director Moses Pendleton chose the name ‘MOMIX’ because it calls to mind the musical term, mix. “There’s no rule for these shows, just whatever kind of chemical way you can drop it, cook it, or spin it,” he stated in an interview with the Calgary Herald, 2018. “It’s a visual, physical dance theatre, but it’s not just dance.” he says, “It uses props and lighting and costumes and special kinds of music to create an otherworldly MOMIX world.” In this spectacular show, MOMIX creates thesetting of a desert. “I was very inspired initially by going down to the Sonora desert in southwest America,” Pendleton recalls. “I was very taken by the flora and the fauna of the desert and impressions of that as it’s translated into dance-theatre form.”

“Few theater artists today can achieve the level of visual splendor and theatrical magic that Mr. Pendleton can conjure from essentially the sparest of means.” – Robert Greskovic The Wall Street Journal

Each of the 18 vignettes in Opus Cactus is performed to Indigenous or Arabic music as well as to compositions from Brian Eno. Pendleton says the elements are arranged to have a narrative “curve,” as you make your way through a desert botanical garden filled with colour and movement, and wonder and surprise! This is a visual masterpiece not to be missed!

The LAC is also offering a sumptuous Dinner & Show Package, which includes dinner at our in-house LIVE restaurant at 5:30PM prior to the show. For more details, call the Box Office.
