The 2013 MARTY Awards, organized by the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC), were held on May 9, 2013 at the Living Arts Centre. It was a night that saw both new and established artists showered with praise, recognition and media attention. The awards show was filled with excitement and anticipation as the winners were announced from a roster of 91 extremely talented nominees. MAC awarded a grand total of $11,000 in the categories of literary, performing, media, creative community and visual arts. 10 artists also received honourable mentions. Winners received a cash prize and extensive recognition from the media and community at large. Artists walked the carpet and mingled with numerous art connoisseurs and media, who covered the event. Following the red-carpet launch, MARTYS host, Tristan Barrocks conducted the award ceremony. The audience enjoyed performances by the Johnny Max Band, the Cawthra Dancers, Vibonics and Zohra Zoberi, along with other outstanding performers. The winners of the 2013 MARTY Awards are:

MISSISSAUGA, ON – Tonight, the Living Arts Centre turned into a melting pot of art and expression as leading artists were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the evolution of the arts scene in Mississauga at the 2013 MARTY Awards, organized by the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC). It was a night that saw both new and established artists showered with praise, recognition and media attention.

"The MARTYS are a celebration of art," exclaimed Linda Thomas, MAC Executive Director. "It is an honour and a privilege to have such talented artists as recipients of the MARTY Awards. Everyone is a winner today and I would encourage all the nominees to be a part of next year's celebrations."

The event was filled with excitement and anticipation as the winners were announced from a roster of 91 extremely talented nominees. One of the winners this year is local comedian and actor Tristan Barrocks, who also hosted the show and won in the categories of Emerging Media Arts and Emerging Performing Arts Group. His production company, World Made Flesh (WMF) took the top spot. Other high profile winners included: internationally acclaimed musician, Tom Barlow; Cow Over the Moon Children's Theatre, known for their innovative performances; well known author and critic Keith Garebian; talented filmmaker, Alvin Campaña; and upcoming television artist, Austin MacDonald.

The MARTYS awarded a grand total of $11,000 in the categories of literary, performing, media, creative community and visual arts. 10 artists also received honourable mentions. Winners received a cash prize and extensive recognition from the media and community at large.

Produced by MAC, the MARTYS are the pinnacle of excitement and publicity for Mississauga's thriving arts community. The red carpet will kick off at 6:30 p.m., along with avec delicious hors d'oeuvres and LIVE streaming courtesy of Live Eye Media. The live feed will be hosted by local Mississauga artist, singer/songwriter and 2013 MARTY Award nominee, Sarah-Jean Villa and will be available in real time at www.livestream.com/mississaugalive. There will also be a plethora of media conducting interviews with all the nominees. The group, Marielba, Eduardo & Greg will be playing their Spanish ballades during the reception.

The award show will start at 8 p.m. and feature an exhilarating lineup of entertainment, including the Johnny Max Band, jazz sensation the Alma Quartet, the Con Brio Singers, the Cawthra Dance Ensemble, and Zohra Zoberi together with Vibonics, performing a creative act contrasting forms of spoken word with poetry. The presentation is called, Internal Flame. Traditional poetry recital and rap music will merge, submerge and emerge as a unique form of word art- to deliver a powerful message to all. Local musician, Kyle Fraser will serenade guests at the VIP after party.

The MARTY Awards celebrate the artistic achievements of the city's established artists while encouraging and supporting emerging artistic talent. The MARTYS have been described as an important launch for many Mississauga artists' careers. Past finalists and winners have moved on to find their place in the international artistic community. This year there are a grand total of 91 artists in the running for the awards. The caliber of artistic talent is exceptional. MISSISSAUGA, April 10, 2013 – Today, Mississauga City Council approved more than $529,400 in funding for the 2013 Community Cultural Festivals and Celebrations (CCFC) Grant Program.

"Access to quality festivals and celebrations is an essential part of a city's cultural infrastructure as it allows for the expression of culture and community," said Susan Burt, director, Culture Division. "The grant program is an important and meaningful way in which the City can support the growth and development of local culture."

Burt explained, the CCFC Grant Program aims to encourage the long-term growth and sustainability of citywide art, heritage and cultural festivals/celebrations; it supports a variety of festivals/celebrations offering a range of activities reflecting the city's many cultural traditions and practices.

Grant applications are reviewed based on established criteria, by a panel of independent assessors who are knowledgeable about festivals and other cultural activities in Mississauga.

Grants will be awarded to 11 Mississauga-based groups, as follows:

MARCH MEDIA ARTS MASH UP PRESENTS THE DOCUMENTARY SHORT, JESSE'S MIRACLE, IN SUPPORT OF BABY JESSE ARRIGO!
JOIN GRANT PADLEY & KEVIN HEDLEY FROM ATOMIC CLOCK CINEMATIC ARTS INC. IN THEIR PRESENTATION & Q&A

MISSISSAUGA, ON – The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) in collaboration with Atomic Clock Cinematic Arts Inc. are excited to present the next Media Arts Mash Up in support of baby Jesse Arrigo on Thursday, March 28th 2013 from 7-9 p.m. at Heritage Mississauga's the Grange (located at 1921 Dundas St. W. in Mississauga).

Filmmakers Grant Padley and Kevin Hedley of Atomic Clock Cinematic Arts Inc. started working with the Arrigo Family in the fall of 2012 on a short film focusing on then sixteen month old near drowning survivor Jesse Arrigo. Over the period of 2 months Grant and Kevin followed Jesse from his various therapy appointments to spending time at home with his family. Over the course of the journey the filmmakers learned more about hope, courage, and love than they could have ever imagined.

Grant and Kevin will be showcasing the documentary short, Jesse's Miracle at the Mash Up, which runs approximately 20 minutes, followed by a Q&A session, where audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions about the production and Jesse's therapies.

Jesse's mother Kristin and grandfather Bob Arrigo will be in attendance along with three of Jesse's key Therapists: Laurie-Ann Fayle from the Ontario Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre; Robert Harris from the Cranial Therapy Centre; and Tema Stein from Footprints Therapy. They will be available from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to answer questions from the media and will be part of the later Q&A after the film. This will be a great time to gain a greater understanding of what everyone does in regard to Jesse's continuing therapies and ongoing recovery.

Media will also have the opportunity to receive a complimentary .mov file of the film, which they will be able to post on their website in order to generate more awareness for baby Jesse and help with his ongoing recovery. Admission is free but donations are welcome at the event to help the Arrigo family pay for the continuing support and ongoing treatments for baby Jesse. Our goal $1000!
