Beyond the Pines Homer Watson and the Contemporary Canadian Landscape
Catalogue Launch & Panel Discussion
Thursday, December 3rd
6:30 (Reception with light refreshments)
7- 9 pm (Panel Discussion)

The AGM celebrates the launch of the catalogue for our current exhibition Beyond the Pines: Homer Watson and the Contemporary Landscape with a panel discussion on the intersection of aesthetics, environmentalism, art history and politics in landscape. Join Curator Kendra Ainsworth, exhibiting artist Reinhard Reitzenstein, catalogue contribhutor Shannon Anderson, and Ivan Jurakic (Director | Curator of the University of Waterloo Art Gallery), in an engaging, cross-disciplinary discussion. Fourth panelist TBA.

Homer Watson is considered to be one of the founders of the Canadian landscape painting tradition. He aimed to give a ‘truthful representation’ of the Canadian wilderness in his work, as distinct from the more romanticized style found in depictions of the English and European countryside. Contemporary Canadian artists looking at landscape must also find a way to access the ‘truth’ of a subject that is not only strongly represented in our national artistic history, but one that is both deeply political and personal. Placing contemporary work by emerging and established artists alongside that of Watson illustrates the universality of the quest to appreciate and capture the landscape in which we live. Exhibiting artists include Jason Brown, Jennifer Carvalho, April Hickox, Brian Jungen and Duane Linklater, Gavin Lynch, Reinhard Reitzenstein, Monica Tap.

Mississauga Culture Talk

Tuesday, December 1, 7 – 9:30 PM
Mississauga Civic Centre | Great Hall | 300 City Centre Drive
Free & Open to the public

The Art Gallery of Mississauga and Mississauga Arts Council invites members of the public to share what cutlure means to them at the first ever Mississauga Culture Talk. Organized by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, eleven community consultation events will be happening across the province focusing on what art, culture and heritage mean to Ontarians. The outcomes will contribute towards shaping the first Culture Strategy for our province.

Culture Talk town halls are part of the Ontario government’s initiatives to seek guidance for the development of the province’s first Culture Strategy. According to Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, “the new culture strategy will help ensure that support for culture reflects these changes, while giving Ontarians a chance to tell their stories and share what arts and culture mean to them.” As Michael Coteau, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport has said, “Ontario’s cultural landscape has evolved and it is important that government priorities reflect this… I look forward to hearing from Ontarians about what they value about arts and culture in their lives and what culture means to them. This is an opportunity for the province to take a fresh look at how it invests in arts and culture, to build our vibrant sectors and to enrich our diverse communities.”

The “Culture Talk” will begin with celebrated artist Bonnie Devine and performer Arlene Paculan in a moderated discussion about the value and place of art, culture and heritage in daily life followed by round table talks.
